From Aphasia to Voice Recovery:On the Forming Paths of Spirit Community in The Magic Toyshop

There exists a plot,from aphasia to voice recovery,in the novel The Magic Toyshop:the protagonist Aunt Margaret became mute on her wedding day and resumed her voice on the day of carnival.By drawing upon the German sociologist Tönnes'community theory,this paper argues that the plot shows Angela Carter's thinking on the formation paths of the spirit community.By exchanging clothes,playing music together,and sharing food,Aunt Margaret transcended paternal hegemony,crossed racial discrimination,and narrowed down the class division.With three different identities,different types of communities are formed,which present diversified ways of forming spirit community.Finally,Aunt Margaret found her own strength and recovered her own voice.
