On Wu Shichang's Inscription Poems on Paintings about“Dream of the Red Chamber”

现代芸芸红学家中,吴世昌至少有四度题咏《红楼梦》的经历。首先是1959年,吴氏《红楼梦探源》英文本脱稿,纪诗五首。此后三度皆与题画有关。1963年,画家刘旦宅为徐平羽绘制《红楼人物图》十二幅,吴氏每幅题诗一首。1978年,吴氏再度应邀,与另外几位诗人为刘旦宅所绘《红楼梦》故事图十二幅题咏,辑成《1979年红楼梦图咏月历》,吴作二首。稍后在1979—1980年间,为程十发所绘《红楼梦人物图》题咏十六首。三度所作题画诗共计三十篇次,诸作皆为七绝。通过此三十篇题画诗的讨论,可以考察吴世昌如何透过诗歌创作与《红楼梦》文本、图像发生互动。

Wu Shichang(1908-1986),a scholar renowned for his research on“Dream of the Red Chamber”,composed poems inspired by this novel on at least four occasions.While still a researcher at Oxford University,Wu composed five quatrains soon after the publication of his book“On the Red Chamber Dream”in 1959.In 1963,one year after Wu's return to China,he was invited to compose twelve quatrains to be inscribed on the newly completed paintings by Liu Danzhai—each picture/quatrain portrays a figure in the novel.In 1978,Wu was again invited to inscribe two quatrains for a calendar,containing twelve paintings by Liu.Later in 1979 or 1980,he wrote sixteen quatrains,each for a picture in the album painted by Cheng Shifa.This paper explores Wu's interpretation of the novel through an analysis of his poems inscribed on the aforementioned paintings,as well as his interaction with the artists.
