French-Spanish Geopolitics in the Catalan Issue

As two neighbouring European powers,France and Spain have always had close geopolitical ties.The“Catalan Issue”,which has become so prominent in recent years,is an internal Spanish issue,but it is also inextricably linked to the geopolitical relations between France and Spain.Historically and presently,France and Spain have had close political,economic and cultural ties and Catalonia has always played a very important role in them.France has always been an important forum for Catalan separatist forces and its attitude has had an important influence on the Catalan issue.Historically,the people living in the territory of the counts of Barcelona were known as“Franks”,but this has not led to a clear cultural identification with France by the people of Barcelona today.Through an analysis of historical and practical factors,this paper reveals the particular and subtle role of French-Spanish geopolitics in influencing the Catalan issue.
