On Xue Jixuan’s Thought of Righteousness and Benefit

薛季宣是永嘉事功学派的创始人,他的事功思想与程朱理学在理论侧重上有着显著的区别。若要捕捉这种显著区别下的内在本质,需要从“义利”关系着手。比较传统义利观与薛季宣的义利观可见,薛季宣的义利观在大体上表现为“以义为本”“利义之和”两个特点。其中,“以义为本”继承了传统义利观“义本利末”的价值观念;“利义之和”则强调了“利”的工具性作用,以及“义”的实践内涵。两者共同施力、互相影响,最终促成了薛季宣思想的“事功”价值取向,同时也为他的事功思想奠定了理论基础。

As the founder of the Yongjia Practical School,Xue Jixuan’s“Practical”thought is significantly distinct from Cheng-Zhu School in theoretical emphasis.To capture the inner essence of this significant difference,it is essential to start from the relationship of“righteousness and benefit”.Based on the comparison between the traditional thought of righteousness and benefit and Xue Jixuan’s thought of righteousness and benefit,it can be inferred that Xue Jixuan’s thought of righteousness and benefit is normally characterized as“righteousness oriented”and“the combination of benefit and righteousness”.Among them,“righteousness oriented”inherits the value concept of“taking righteousness as the foundation,while,benefit as the end”in the traditional thought of righteousness and benefit;and the“combination of benefit and righteousness”highlights the instrumental role of“benefit”and the practical connotation of“righteousness”.The mutual influence of the two forces contributed to the practical orientation of Xue Jixuan’s thought and laid a theoretical foundation for his practical thought.
