The Poetical Dimension of Katherine Mansfield’s Short Story Miss Brill

凯瑟琳·曼斯菲尔德以短篇小说在现代主义运动中独树一帜,但其名作《布里尔小姐》在国内学术界所受关注尚显不足。学界通常将目光放在现代主义小说的文类边界之内,探究该小说的相应内涵。与之有所不同,本文认为小说植根于既有传统和现实土壤,一方面继承古典诗歌传统,另一方面借鉴同时代现代主义诗歌的艺术手法,因而映现出明显的诗歌特性,即戏剧性、抒情性以及聚合性。诗性特征是曼氏小说艺术的一大特色,亦是她为现代主义小说革新所做出的贡献。

As a short story writer,Katherine Mansfield plays a distinctive role in the modernist movement,while Miss Brill has not won enough attention in the literary research field of China.Researchers,usually situates the story within the scope of modernist fiction,and then examine the contents concerned.Different from them,this paper holds that as all literary works,this story is deeply rooted in a historical and contemporary tradition,so it has inherited classical poetical nourishment,and incorporated the techniques of modernist poetry;therefore it comes to life with a distinct poetical dimension,as specifically evidenced by its dramatical,lyrical and cohesive attributes.The poetical dimension is a distinct feature of the fiction of Katherine Mansfield and also one of her contributions to the innovation of modernist fiction.
