A Metaphorical Study of Viviette’s Ending in Two on a Tower

Viviette,the heroine of Thomas Hardy’s Two on a Tower,has the dual qualities of“the New Woman”and“the Angel in the House”,and her life ends in an unexpected reunion with her lover in the old tower.Viviette’s death is the result of a combination of intenal and external factors,and it contains at least three levels of metaphorical meanings:a metaphor for the decline of rural civilization in Viviette’s time;the author’s pessimism about the fate of women;and the author’s transition from romanticism to realism and modernism.Based on these analyses,this article can restore a modernist Hardy,a modernist prophet who perceives his time clearly and predicates the future warningly.Meanwhile,questions such as“Hardy and modernism”and“Hardy and misogyny”can also be partially answered in this novel.
