The Characteristics of Emperor Renzong of Song’s“Benevolence,Filial Piety,and Abundance”and Its Influence on Political Affairs and Other Aspects

宋仁宗是宋朝在位时间最长的皇帝之一,前后居庙堂四十二年,以恪守成宪而著称。宋仁宗在亲政前,因深受传统教育与母后管教的影响,形成温顺的性情。这一成长经历促成了宋仁宗“仁孝宽裕”的特点,并将其渗透到朝政以及个人生活之中。他依赖文官士大夫处理政务,以包容的方式运用皇权,这不仅使得朝堂颇具宽松的氛围,也进一步促进了文官政治的发展。在此阶段,统治集团因循守成,缺乏变革的动力和魄力,从而面临愈益严重的内外挑战。故当时虽称承平,宋廷域内统治稳固,特别是在崇文抑武路线引导下,文教建设蒸蒸日上,由此颇得后世宋人的赞誉。但与此同时,边患未绝,甚至几度出现了边防危机;政治上则日趋保守,致使朝政积弊随之加深。宋仁宗时代的统治,就此呈现出明显的内忧外患之势。

Emperor Renzong of Song was one of the longest reigning emperors of the Song Dynasty,who lived in temples for 42 years and was known for his adherence to the Constitution.Due to the influence of his growth experience,Emperor Renzong of Song developed the characteristic of“benevolence,filial piety,and abundance”,which was integrated into the political and personal life of the court.He relied on civil servants and literati to handle government affairs and controlled them in an inclusive manner,which not only created a relaxed atmosphere in the court,but also further promoted the development of civil politics.At this stage,the ruling group follows the rules and lacks the motivation and courage to change,thus facing increasingly serious internal and external challenges.Therefore,although it was called Chengping at that time,the rule in the Song Dynasty was stable,especially under the guidance of the line of advocating literature and suppressing martial arts,and the construction of culture and education was thriving,which was highly praised by later Song people.But at the same time,the border crisis has not been completely eradicated,and there have even been several border defense crises.Politically,it has become increasingly conservative,leading to a deepening of the accumulated drawbacks of the court’s politics.The changes in the governance of the Song court have shown a trend of accumulated weakness.
