The creation of ancient Chinese poetry was deeply influenced by the Confucian doctrine of“gentle and earnest”,which emphasized restrained lyricism and unity of emotions. However, the creation of folk songs in the Southern Dynasty seems to break the shackles of this poetic view, and most of them are love songs, expressing the passionate emotional will of individuals without any taboo. This paper will take Song of the West Continent, the representative folk song of Southern Yuefu Dynasty,as an example to discuss why Chinese southern folk songs can break through this“national taboo”,leaving such gentle and lingering love poems, and explore under what social, historical and cultural background a series of Chinese love songs were born.
