This article explores the role of cafes in the films of the French New Wave movement that emerged in the 1960s.Cafes made up crucial strategic spaces for this generation of filmmakers, such as Claude Chabrol,Eric Rohmer,Jean-Luc Godard and Francois Truffaut, offering a familiar and natural stting for meeting, conversation, seduction, and depicting everyday life. The afes of Paris were a central location for the young.bohemian characters of these films, who were often portrayed as intellectwals, artists, and rebels.Cafes also served as a place from which to observe urban life, including the streets, passersby, and the specific soundscape of the city.By filming in authentic social spaces rather than studios, the New Wave filmmakers truly aptured the lived experience of Parisian cafes, while using them as a means to explore themes of alienation, disillusionment, and existentialism.
