紫砂壶名称的由来是依托于紫砂壶的出现、发展与变化,其背后又深受饮茶习俗的转变、成型工艺的完备、名工与文人的深度参与等多个方面因素的相互作用与影响。明末清初,紫砂壶名称的萌芽及出现,具有明显的早期探索特征,并呈现出种类多样、兼容并存的特点;清代早中期,“宜兴壶”名称获得普及,同时文人阶层对紫砂壶的多种称呼也一并共存;而到清代中后期,“紫砂壶”的通行称呼才开始零星出现,并直至清末及民国初年逐渐兴起与流行。
