夏昌世、杨锡宗是中国南方早期建筑师中的代表人物,他们留存下来的设计,显示出对建筑、对整体控制以及在要素、构造、物理环境、经济条件等方面的考量,值得仔细研讨.文章记录了华南理工大学设计教学的一次尝试,此次教学指导研究生对原中山大学图书馆(现华南理工大学图书馆)改建项目进行观察,配合设计图纸和文字资料对其进行描述和比较分析,并尝试讨论建筑师在图书馆设计中采用的不同方法,用建筑观察的方式理解建筑.

Hsia Changshi and Yeung Sekjung are representative figures of the first generation of modern architects in southern China.Their designs present the overall control and organization of thefacade,as well as the plan,including structural,elemental,climatic,and economicconsiderations.Thispaperpresentsthe design teaching experiment in SCUT,observes therenovation project of the former SunYatsen University Library(now the Library of South China University of Technology),describes and compares it based on design drawings and archive research,and attempts to discuss the different methods of architects in design,to understand architecture by architectural observation.
