From April to July 2016,the Hunan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and others conducted excavations at the Xinwuwan locus of the Tanheli site in Ningxiang City,Hunan Province, and discovered cultural remains dating at the Western and Eastern Zhou and the Six Dynasties periods.Amongst them,Western Zhou period remains were most abundant, including features such as midden pits, ditches, and post holes, along with artifacts made of pottery, stoneware, bronze, and stone, etc.,similar to unearthed artifacts from the Tanheli city site, thus dated to the early to middle Western Zhou period.Eastern Zhou period remains were predominated by Chu culture pottery such as li tripods, basins, dou stemmed vessels, and jars, dating to the early to middle Warring States period.Six Dynasties period remains mainly consisted of stoneware jars, pottery basins, and other types of artifacts dating to the Sun Wu period. These discoveries provide important material for further researching the chronology and periodization of the Tanheli culture and exploring issues such as cultural sequence and settlement transformation during the Shang and Zhou periods in the Huangcai Basin.
