In 2003,the Han Chang'an City Working Team of the Institute of Archaeology,Chinese Academy of Social Sciences discovered two small cities connected side by side from east to west in the northeastern part of the Han Chang'an city site in Xi'an through coring, arguing that they were the sites of the east and west palaces of Chang'an city during the Sixteen Kingdoms through the Northern Dynasties periods. From November to December 2008,the gate on the palatial wall between the east and west palaces was excavated, and coring was conducted in surrounding areas.Important discoveries were made. The architectural structure and construction process of the palatial gate and its palace wall were revealed, and key features such as moats parallel to the palace wall and rammed earth walls on both sides of the roads of the palatial city were newly discovered, alongside many unearthed artifacts. These materials provide an important basis for further studying the layout and diachronic changes of the palatial city of Chang'an from the Sixteen Kingdoms through the Northern Dynasties periods.
