A Study on the Paratexts of Julia Lovell’s Monkey King:Journey to the West

文学译本在目的语国家的传播和接受在一定程度上受到其副文本质量的影响。蓝诗玲翻译的《西游记》节译本《猴王:西游记》(以下简称蓝译本)自出版以来收获了目的语读者的广泛赞誉。该译本的副文本类型多样,且所含信息丰富,对译本的传播和接受,以及《西游记》和中国文化在目的语国家的形象建构具有重要意义。本文以蓝译本为研究对象,从呈现原著特点、推动译本传播和促进译本接受三个维度入手,探讨其所采用的副文本设计策略。本文旨在拓展《西游记》英译研究的视角,同时为中国文学经典外译提供借鉴。

Paratext has a certain influence on the dissemination and acceptance of literary translations in the world of target language.The latest English translation of Journey to the West,Monkey King:Journey to the West,which is translated by Julia Lovell,has received widespread praise from target language readers since its publication.This new translated version of Journey to the West contains varied types of paratexts with rich information,which is of great significance to the dissemination and reception of the translation,as well as the image construction of Journey to the West and Chinese culture in target language countries.Based on the paratexts of Monkey King:Journey to the West,this paper discusses the paratext design strategies adopted in this work from the perspectives of presenting the characteristics of the original,promoting the dissemination of and facilitating the acceptance of the translation.The paper aims to expand the research scope of English translation of Journey to the West and explore useful ideas and methods that the paratexts of Monkey King:Journey to the West can provide for the English translation of Chinese literary classics.
