留法勤工俭学运动是五四运动时期最重要的留学热潮和救国运动之一,它的兴起得益于华法教育会的运筹、地方官绅的推动、法国各界的支持和青年社团的组织。其中,深受新文化运动和五四运动洗礼的青年社团在思想动员、人员聚合、组织协调等方面发挥了至关重要的作用,分别体现为:少年中国学会进行广泛的思想动员、新民学会促成全国留法预备的高潮、寰球中国学生会提供周到的行前准备、觉悟社训练天津学生运动骨干。这些社团的组织和支持,不仅促使留法勤工俭学发展成为涉及全国19省的系统工程,也为该运动后来转向共产主义铺垫了思想和组织基础。
