At the end of the twentieth century,a great number of life writings of disease and illness were published in America, mostly written by highly educated females, among whom Lucy Grealy was an outstanding example. In Her Autobiography of a Face, she protests against the body politics in the patriarchal culture which idealizes bodily perfection and prompts the stigmatization of women who are disfigured and disabled. Her memoir not only is an antidote to stigma, but also expresses the idea that the anomalousness of her body is more a social construct of dominant ideology than a biological aberration.
