摘要
《范希周》作为最早被完整译为英文的文言小说之一,映射出19世纪初期英国汉学之境况。通过比较小斯当东译本和韦斯顿译本,可见彼时英国汉学家翻译动机各异其趣、翻译水平参差不齐。两位译者将《范希周》归入关系错综的不同文类,究其原因,不仅是由于中英知识体系之间的碰撞,还与当时两种体系内部或隐或现的变动有关。
As one of the earliest classical Chinese novels fully translated into English,Fan-hy-cheu reflects the situation of Sinology in Britain in the early 19th century.George Thomas Staunton’s and Stephen Weston’s translations are different in many ways, owing largely to their differences in motivation and quality of translation. The two translators classified Fan-hy-cheu into different types of texts with intricate relationships not only due to the collision between Chinese and English knowledge systems, but also to the internal or implicit changes of the two systems at that time.
