A New Study of Ancient Suction Cups

吸杯是盛行于唐代的一类特殊杯形,经过对古代文献的梳理可以看出,其命名源自“碧筒”,但与荷叶杯又有所区别。荷叶杯是从杯口形制而得名,吸杯命名来源则是其用法。结合当时的文物遗存材料及文献记载,推论出吸杯的主要功用并非洗鼻,而是为了饮酒时减少酒中杂质之用。其用法还是以口唇吸酒。

Suction cups are a kind of special cup shape that prevailed in the Tang Dynasty.After combing the ancient literature,it can be deduced that the cup had its name derived from“green cup with a straw”,and was different from the lotus leaf cup.The lotus leaf cup is named after the its mouth shape,while the suction cup is named after its usage.With a reference to the antiques and literature records,it is inferred that the main function of the suction cup is not to wash nose,but to reduce impurities in wine for drinking,which is realized by sucking with lips.
