The tension and subversive revolutionary power of the works produced by the San Francisco Mime Troupe stems primarily from the festive and ritual nature of its performance form.As the most famous left-wing troupe in the San Francisco Bay Area,the Troupe has discovered the common ground between radically-themed plays and folk popular ones,which is to break the old,commonplace,existing norms and conventions,and to establish the new,transcendent,ideal rules and order.The Troupe has extensively borrowed and transformed folk popular performance forms,combining the festive and ritual nature of its performances with its revolutionary ideals and goals.The revelry of festivals and the experience of transformation between life and death in rituals,powerful enough to destroy the old and generate the new,are the source of the revolutionary energy of the Troupe's radical theater.
