You stand on the bridge overlooking the scenery; In the pavilion someone looking at the scenery gazes at you.——Bian Zhilin,Fragment Bridges are born out of human beings’need and desire for surmounting obstacles.Spaces that were once isolated become connected due to bridges. For overland routes, rivers are barriers that need to be bridged;accordingly, the landscape of‘many a small bridge bestriding waterways’became prominent no later than the 8th century in China’s Taihu Lake catchment area, crisscrossed with a network of rivers and commonly known as the‘water towns of Jiangnan(the region immediately to the south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River)’.
