Research into the Community of Translation by Hualing Nieh Engle:Collaborative(合)Translation/Peaceful(和)Translation,Creative Translation and Cosmopolitanism

华人小说家聂华苓与美国诗人保罗·安格尔(Paul Engle)于1967年创办了“国际写作计划”,该计划是一个以翻译活动为基石的文学共同体。在主持该项目期间,聂华苓主持编纂、亲自翻译了多部作品,并提出“合译”模式与“和译”思维,以化解不同成员间由于不同背景和语言差异所产生的文化碰撞。基于该翻译思维,聂华苓在翻译汉诗时保留原诗意象,并借用语法功能强化意象的感知方式,实现了创造性翻译,构建了译者、合译者、作者和读者之间超越单一文本的立体平台。在这个文学共同体之下,聂华苓以生命经验的共性为依托,将翻译作为她思考人类共同命运的重要面向。

Hualing Nieh Engle,a Chinese American novelist,and Paul Engle,an American poet,jointly founded the International Writing Program in 1967 that was a literary community based on translational activities.While running the program,Hualing Nieh Engle edited,compiled or translated many works.She also proposed the idea of'collaborative(合)translation'and'peaceful(和)translation',to dissolve the cultural conflicts produced by different members as a result of their different backgrounds and languages.Based on that translational thinking,Hualing Nieh Engle,when she translated Chinese poetry,kept the images of the original poems and,by strengthening the perceptive ways of imagery with grammatical functions,realized creative translation,and constructed a three-dimensional platform that transcends the single texts between the translator,the co-translator,the author and the reader.In such a literary community,Hualing Nieh Engle,relying on the commonality of life experience,used translation as her important orientation towards thinking about the common fate of humanity.
