Does Experiencing Social Exclusion Necessarily Decrease Prosocial Behavior?The Moderating Effect of Future Orientation

目的:考察社会排斥对亲社会行为的影响,并探讨未来取向的调节作用。方法:研究1采用cyberball范式操纵社会排斥,考察其对亲社会行为的影响。研究2采用回忆范式操纵社会排斥验证研究1,并进一步考察了未来取向在社会排斥与亲社会行为之间的调节作用。结果:研究1发现,相较于控制组被试,遭受社会排斥的被试表现出较低的亲社会行为。研究2验证了研究1的结果,并发现未来取向在感知到的社会排斥与亲社会行为的关系中起显著调节作用。具体而言,相较于未来取向较高的个体,未来取向较低的个体感受到高社会排斥时,亲社会行为下降更为显著。结论:遭受社会排斥使人表现出更低的亲社会行为,且未来取向在社会排斥与亲社会行为的关系中起显著调节作用。

Objective:This study aimed to explore the boundary conditions of social exclusion affecting prosocial behavior.Methods:Study 1(n=240)manipulated social exclusion by Cyberball paradigm,and randomly assigned participants into a control group,an ignorance group,or a rejection group.Participants'prosocial behavior was measured with a questionnaire.Study 2(n=249)further measured participants'future orientation,then used the recall paradigm to manipulate social exclusion and examined the moderating effect of future orientation on the relationship between social exclusion and prosocial behavior.Results:Study I found that participants who were socially excluded were less willing to help others,compared to their counterparts in the control groups.Study 2 replicated this finding,and further found that future orientation moderated the relation between perceived social rejection and prosocial behavior.Specifically,individuals with lower level of future orientation were less willing to help when being socially excluded.Conclusion:Social exclusion leads to a significant decrease in individuals'prosocial behavior.Future orientation significantly moderates the relation between perceived social rejection and prosocial behavior.
