Researches on modality:Review and prospects

本文在情态概念溯源及辨析的基础上,回顾了英语中的情态研究、现代汉语中的情态研究、语篇中的情态研究以及英汉情态对比研究,认为情态研究已取得丰硕的理论研究和应用研究成果,但依然存在需要深入研究的问题,如情态分类不一致、情态语义观的对立、情态共现的语义解释、情态歧义的消解机制,以及情态语义的逻辑一致性等问题。

This paper,after tracing the notion of modality to its origin and analyzing the different senses in which the term is used,digs further into the literature in the study of English modality,modality in modern Chinese,modalities in discourse,and the comparison between English and Chinese modality.Then it offers prospects for future research on issues such as the inconsistency in the categorization of modality,the discrepancy in the semantic perspective of modality,the inadequacy of theoretical account of modal co-occurrence,and the discordance in the view of logical relationships that underlie different types of modality.
