A strong state is often considered closely related to the institutionalization and rationalization within the state,and is also often seen as the result of state building efforts with political elites at the top and bottom.However,strong states also have profound social integration and economic roots.Different studies have provided different answers on how society and economy affect powerful states.Unlike many studies that emphasize the importance of economic development driving political development and strong society building strong states,Migdal’s research focuses on the more complex impact of third world countries'society and economy on national capacities,revealing the social forces competing for social control with the state and the impact of the global spread of capitalist systems on modern state building in third world countries.These studies have important implications for our understanding of the growth of China's national capacities.
