South Korea's Strengthening of Relations with Pacific Island Countries

国际社会正日益关注太平洋岛国,其中韩国尤其令人瞩目。尹锡悦政府提出“全球枢纽国家”愿景,首次发表“印太战略”,明确宣布太平洋岛国是其重要伙伴,并计划投入更多外交资源提升韩太双边关系,包括举行首届韩太首脑峰会,增加对太平洋岛国的官方援助,拟增设更多外交使团等。韩国主要目的是争取太平洋岛国在国际舞台上给予其政治支持,争夺太平洋岛国海域的资源,对接盟主美国的“印太战略”,收紧对朝鲜的外交压力和经济制裁,提升韩国的国际地位等。但无论是从综合国力,还是从地缘政治地位来看,韩国在深化与太平洋岛国关系方面都面临不少困难。韩国强化同太平洋岛国的关系在一定程度上是为了服务美国,所以也会间接干扰中国对太平洋岛国的外交。

The international community is paying more attention to the Pacific island countries,especially South Korea.After the Yoon Suk Yeol government came to power,South Korea has put forward the vision of a"global pivotal state"and published the Korean version of the"Indo-Pacific Strategy"for the first time.The strategy has clearly declared that Pacific island countries are its important partners,and plans to invest more diplomatic resources to enhance bilateral relations between South Korea and the Pacific island countries,including holding the first South Korea-Pacific Islands Summit,increasing offcial assistance to Pacific island countries,and planning to add more diplomatic missions.The main purposes of South Korea are to win political support from the Pacific island countries on the international stage,compete for resources in the waters of the Pacific island countries,align with the"Indo-Pacific strategy"of the United States,tighten diplomatic pressure and economic sanctions on the DPRK,and enhance South Korea's international status.However,whether from the perspective of comprehensive national strength or geopolitical status,South Korea faces many difficulties in deepening its relations with Pacific island countries.South Korea's strengthening of relations with Pacific island countries is partly to serve the United States,so it will also indirectly interfere with China's diplomacy towards Pacific island countries.
