The Reconstruction of Gender Relations in Angela Carter's Novels——The Case of Nights at the Circus

《马戏团之夜》作为安吉拉·卡特的代表作,体现了卡特对男权制度下两性关系的反思与重构。男权制的统治权威以及延伸出的文化价值取向,使女性丧失话语权力。因此小说中的女性角色试图通过身体与女性情谊等方式,挣脱男权话语的桎梏,重构女性话语秩序。而为适应全新话语秩序下的主体性,打破男性凝视,飞飞等女性形象通过自我斗争冲破规约,并在宏观上质疑与颠覆男性凝视掌控的文化语境。最后,通过对现有两性婚姻观的反思,卡特提出要通过女性劳动与两性缔结真爱的方式重构和谐的两性关系。卡特对两性关系的重构看似具有理想主义色彩,但对于和谐两性关系的发展具有重要的意义。

Nights at the Circus,Angela Carter's masterpiece,embodies Carter's reflection on and reconstruction of gender relations in a patriarchal system.The dominant authority of the patriarchyand the extended cultural value orientation make women lose their discourse power.The female characters in the novel therefore attempt to break free from the shackles of patriarchal discourse and reconstruct the female discourse order through physical and homosexual love.In order to adapt to the new discursive order of subjectivity and to break the male gaze,female characters such as Fevvers break the rules through self-struggle and question and subvert the cultural context controlled by the male gaze on a macro level.Finally,by reflecting on the existing view of marriage between the sexes,Carter proposes to reconstruct a harmonious relationship between the sexes through female labour and the conclusion of true love between the sexes.Carter's reconstruction of gender relations may seem idealistic,but it has important implications for the development of harmonious gender relations.
