Whether a"good deed"will become an"evil deed"is the result of individual's different moral selfregulation.Based on the view of moral self-regulation,this paper explores the relationship mechanism between prosocial behavior and unethical behavior under different moral symbolizations, and the mediating effect of pride.Experiment 1(experiencing method,159 college students)tested the interaction effect of prosocial behavior and moral symbolization on unethical behavior and found that individuals with high(vs.low)moral symbolization will(vs.not)reduce unethical behavior after performing prosocial behavior.Experiment 2(recalling method,202 employees)reconfirmed this interaction effect and found the mediation effect of authentic pride, such that the prosocial behavior will negatively influence unethical behavior via authentic pride for individuals with high moral symbolization. However, this interaction effect will be reversed through the mediating effect of hubristic pride, such that the prosocial behavior will positively influence unethical behavior via hubristic pride for individuals with high moral symbolization. This research reveals the dual relationship mechanisms between"good deeds"and"evil deeds"from the perspective of pride emotion, which can help guide organizations to prevent prosocial behavior of individual with high moral symbolization transform into unethical behavior through emotion management.
