The rise and fall of academic thoughts in ancient China had its own characteristics, but there is also a basic clue playing a leading role, that is,the way of“being close to the people”in Great Learning. It is often hidden behind complicated cultural appearances, making it difficult to be detected. If a little attention is paid to the history of Chinese thoughts,it will be found that the reason why an idea can be popular for a long time and on a wide scale,or sustain vitality in the fluctuation,is the idea’s being close to the reality of people’s lives,or in line with the characteristics of the national culture and psychology,or else it will either fall into silence,or disappear completely.Because the so-called“common aspiration of the people”in traditional Chinese philosophy often has a general and constant nature, being close to the people can be close to Dao to maintain the vitality of the theory all the time. Moreover,“being close to the people”is precisely the theoretical basis for the Chinese people’s emphasis on practicality, rather than the pursuit of utilitarianism,as is often said.“Being close to the people”can make people develop a sense of history and transcend the limitations of natural life.Getting close to people’s lives to stimulate the inherent sense of life in each school of thought is precisely the historical inspiration brought by the rise and fall of ideas.
