An Explorative Study on the Causes of Singlehood from the Perspective of Evolutionary Psychology:An Adaptive Strategy or Evolutionary Mismatch?

在对836名单身青年问卷调查的基础上,从进化框架下揭示当代中国青年单身的原因。统计结果显示,单身现象的原因可以分成6个维度;单身原因在性别、受教育程度以及单身类型变量上存在显著组间差异;女性随着年龄增长“友谊优先”维度得分没有显著变化,男性随着年龄增长其得分显著下降;男性的受教育水平越低,“择偶动机缺乏”维度得分越高;被动单身者随年龄增大在“择偶动机缺乏”维度得分显著下降。研究结果支持适应性策略和进化失配是导致不同群体保持单身的主要原因。

Based on a survey with 836 single youths,this study reveals the causes of singlehood among Chinese young people from an evolutionary framework.The results of data analysis show that the reasons for singleness can be divided into six dimensions.There are significant differences for the causes of singlehood on gender,educational level,choosing to be single actively or passively and currents emotional states.Further analysis shows that men of older age show a significant lower score on the dimension of“preferring friendship”;Men with lower educational level tend to score higher on the dimension of“insufficient motivation to pursue the romantic relationship”;People who passively choose to be single increase their score significantly on the dimension of“insufficient motivation to pursue the romantic relationship”with age.Overall,for Chinese youth adaptive strategies and evolutionary mismatch are the main reasons of being single.
