Christian M.I.M.Matthiessen,one of the leading scholars in Systemic Functional Linguistics,has made various achievements in register studies.This paper summarizes Matthiessen's opinions on register,discusses the trinocular views of register,interprets the differences between dialectal variation and codal variation as well as interprets register in the perspectives of the cline of instantiation and the hierarchy of stratification.In addition,this paper locates register studies in Systemic Functional Linguistics within the overall framework of linguistics and associates Systemic Functional Linguistics with the different schools of linguistics.This paper also reports on the project of registerial cartography started and developed by Christian Matthiessen.The background and goals of the project are introduced and the primary eight types of field of activity are differentiated.
