The Paradigm of Western Transmission of Chinese Culture in the early 19th Century:Take Morrison's Chinese-English Dictionary as an Example

19世纪早期在中国本土出版的《华英字典》是汉英、英汉双语词典的发轫之作,成为后来多部汉英、英汉双语词典编纂的典范。该字典开创了把汉字、汉语及中国文化融于一体的编纂理念,既有学习属性又有文化传播属性,是“中国礼仪之争”之后“中学西传”的开篇,奠定了近代时期英美汉学研究的基础。本文探讨其编纂理念、内容构架及向西传播中国文化的途径和视角,以期为当今书业“走出去”提供借鉴。

The Chinese-English Dictionary,which was published in China in the early 19th century,represents the beginning of Chinese-English and English-Chinese bilingual dictionaries,and has become a model for the compilation of many such dictionaries.It created the compilation idea of integrating Chinese characters,Chinese language and Chinese culture,which can serve foreign language learners and promote cultural transmission as well.It was the beginning of “ The Introduction of Chinese Culture to the West” after the “Chinese Rites Controversy ”,and laid the foundation for the study of Sinology in Britain and America in modern times.This paper discusses its compilation concept,content structure and the way and perspective of spreading Chinese culture to the west,in order to provide reference for the contemporary book industry to promote culture “going global”.
