中国古代数学典籍《九章算术》英译者郭树理、伦华祥口述访谈

An Interview with Prof.John N.Crossley and Dr.Anthony W.C.Lun Co-translating the Chinese Mathematical Classic Jiuzhang Suanshu into English

口述科技翻译史料是书写中国科学翻译史的参照资料。本文借助口述史方法,对英译李俨、杜石然《中国古代数学简史》以及中国古代数学典籍《九章算术》《海岛算经》的澳大利亚学者郭树理、伦华祥进行了访谈。二人谈及中国数学翻译缘起和西方数学史学者对他们《中国古代数学简史》英译本的非难,并重点回忆了与沈康身合译《九章算术》的过程、编辑出版、翻译难点和术语处理等问题。这些口述史料彰显了他们传播中国古代数学文明的贡献,同时为深入研究他们的中国数学著述译介提供了更详实的资料。

Oral history of scientific and technological translation is one of the resources to chart the landscape of Chinese science translation history.For this reason,this paper follows the approach of oral historiography,to interview the Australian scholars John N.Crossley and Anthony W.C.Lun,who co-translated Li Yan Du Shiran's Chinese Mathematics:A Concise History as well as the Chinese mathematical classics Jiuzhang Suanshu and Haidao Suanjing into English.Specifically,they mentioned the origins of translating Chinese mathematics and some Western science historians' criticism for their translated Chinese Mathematics:A Concise History.Particularly,they awakened reminiscence of the translation process,publishing,terminology translation difficulties with Prof.Shen Kangshen in translating Jiuzhang Suanshu.These invaluable truths highlight Prof.Crossley and Dr.Lun's contributions in spreading traditional Chinese mathematics worldwide,and serve as more well-rounded information to scientifically research into their translated works.
