刘声木《桐城文学渊源考》旨趣首在推尊桐城文派,欲以一县之文经纬天下,是一部兼有师友录与道学渊源考体例的学术文献。刘氏传承家族儒学传统,推崇宋学并专精文献目录,系心于以桐城文学为核心的江淮地域文化,固守晚清遗民理念,并将道学置于文学观念之上。全书持论以宋学渊源为宗,以桐城派文人为阐释对象,以遗民心态观照一代学术,体现了文化保守主义立场,在传统文化被批判的时代系统梳理学术源流,保存旧观,在学术史上具有承先启后的意义。

Liu Shengmu’s A Study of the Origins of Tongcheng Literature aimed to promote the Tongcheng literary school and to use the literature of a single county as a common standard for literature as a whole.It is an academic document that serves both as a list of teachers and friends and as a study of Taoist origins.Liu Shengmu inherited the tradition of Confucianism in his family,advocated Song learning and specialized in literature catalogues,and focused on the regional culture of Jianghuai with Tongcheng literature as the core.He firmly adhered to the ideas shared by the followers of the late Qing Dynasty,and placed Taoism above literary ideas.The work takes the origin of Song learning as its purpose,takes Tongcheng School figures as the research object,and views Qing Dynasty academia with the mentality of a remnant,reflecting a cultural conservative stance.In an era of traditional culture being criticized,the author sorted out the academic origins and preserved the old views,which has the significance in connecting the past and the future in the academic history.
