The Battle of Shanggao in 1941 was the sweeping battle launched by the Japanese army with the goal of attacking the combat capabilities of the 19th Group Army and plundering materials. However,Japan was strategically unstable and in a state of self-contradiction.In terms of tactics and military operations, various troops also failed to cooperate effectively, ultimately falling into the encirclement of the national army and causing heavy losses. Before the war,the national government had a relatively accurate understanding of the Japanese army’s possible strategy of advancing southward. At the same time, the Ninth Theater Command also had a high degree of vigilance and clear judgment on the possibility of Japanese attacks in the Shanggao and Gao’an regions, and had made a series of pre-war preparations.During wartime, the generals of the national army commanded properly at all stages, were able to take the initiative, and the army was able to complete established tasks according to the combat plan.Under the appropriate arrangement of the national government, this anti-sweeping war evolved into a quite successful encirclement and annihilation battle, and the Shanggao victory was hailed as the“most wonderful battle since the beginning of the war”.In short, the Battle of Shanggao,as a representative of medium-sized battles during the counter-Japanese war,has certain research value.
