A survey of the English translations of Talks at the Yenan Forum on Literature and Art

本文在勾勒不同历史时期国内外《在延安文艺座谈会上的讲话》(简称《讲话》)英译概貌基础上,重点关注北京外文出版社译本和美国密歇根大学中国研究中心的译本,通过比较两者对毛泽东文艺话语关键概念“立场”“大众”和“大众化”,以及核心范畴“普及”与“提高”的翻译,剖析《讲话》的价值内涵在国内外译本中呈现的差异,阐释其背后不同的翻译动机和时代诉求。《讲话》跨世纪的英译证明马克思主义文艺理论中国化深远的世界性影响。

The study provides a comprehensive overview of the English translations of the Talks at the Yenan Forum on Literature and Art(abbreviated as the Talks)both within China and internationally.It specifically focuses on two widely acknowledged translated versions:one published by Beijing Foreign Languages Press and the other by Center for Chinese Studies,Michigan University.By conducting a comparative analysis of key terms such as"stand point"(li chang/立场),"the masses"(da zhong/大众),"the mass style"(da zhong hua/大众化),"popularization"(pu ji/普及),and"raising standards"(ti gao/提高),this study examines and explores the changes in the fundamental meaning and values of the Talks between the original Chinese text and the translated versions.These variations are elucidated through an analysis of the diverse motivations and strategies employed by the translators,which were influenced by historical factors and contem-porary trends.Ultimately,this study argues that the translation of the Talks across centuries offers compelling evidence of the far-reaching global influence of the Sinicization of Marxist literary theory.
