The Academic Purpose of Li Ji's Archaeological Survey in the Southern Fenhe River Basin of Shanxi and the Excavation in Xiyin Village

李济汾河流域考古调查,是以文献记载的晋南是夏王朝初创时期的王都为线索的,其学术目的是为从考古学上重建夏商历史寻找证据并探究中国文化的源头。调查过程中,与夏有关的遗存是工作重点,而西阴村仰韶文化遗址是意外发现。李济发掘西阴村前后,仰韶文化被认为是与小屯文化前后相接的文化遗存,仰韶文化与小屯文化的关系、仰韶文化的年代和仰韶是否为夏的问题,是当时考古学研究的主要问题。

Li Ji's archaeological survey in the Fenhe River basin was conducted with the clue that Jinnan(southern Shanxi),as recorded in the documents,was the royal capital during the early establishment of the Xia Dynasty.Its academic aim was to seek evidence and explore the origins of Chinese culture from an archaeological perspective to reconstruct the history of the Xia and Shang dynasties.During the survey,the remains related to Xia were the focus of the work,whereas the Yangshao culture site in Xiyincun Village was discovered unexpectedly.Before and after Li Ji's excavation in Xiyincun Village,the Yangshao culture was considered to be connected with the Xiaotun culture.The relationship between the Yangshao and Xiaotun cultures,the data of the Yangshao culture,and whether the Yangshao was the Xia were major issues in archaeological research at that time.
