"What Could a Seventy-year Old Man Demand":Miao Quansun during the Hongxian Monarchy

缪荃孙在民初以遗老学者知名于世,袁世凯发起帝制运动后,他曾响应与配合,此举引发了很多争议。但有关此事的记载却语焉不详,甚或充满史实错误。本文援用直接或间接的材料,考辨真伪同时,努力去揭示缪荃孙在洪宪帝制中的实际作为及其造成的反响,进而再现这段几乎被人遗忘的学人旧事。

Miao Quansun was famous as a scholar as well as an adherent of the Qing Dynasty in early Republic of China,but after Yuan Shikai launched the imperial movement,Miao Quansun responded and cooperated actively,which once caused criticisms from the mass and dissatisfactions from Wang Guowei and Luo Zhenyu.However,the relevant records are vague or even full of historical errors.This research uses direct or indirect materials,tries to reveal Miao Quansun's actual behaviors in the Hongxian monarchy and their repercussions,and re-discover this almost forgotten old story of scholars.
