The shortage of protein feed resources is a major challenge faced by China's animal husbandry development, and it also hinders the development of animal husbandry with quality and efficiency.Ruminants can use non-protein nitrogen(NPN)(such as urea, urea phosphate, etc.)as a feed nitrogen source to reduce the consumption of plant protein such as soybean meal, thereby,to a certain extent, alleviating the current situation of protein feed resource shortage and contributing to reduce feeding costs. This paper mainly focused on the principle of using NPN in ruminants, the feeding value of NPN and benefits of replacing soybean by NPN,in order to provide scientific foundation for further promoting the rational application of NPN and the reduction and substitution of soybean meal.
