“The Well”,the representative work of Australian writer Elizabeth Jolly, reveals the attempt and frustration of marginal women to subvert their traditional identity under the discipline of mainstream discourse violence.Different from the use of ordinary and unitary symbolic technique and the previous interpretation of directional symbolism, the symbolic images in the novel:the well, farm and fashion goods are all paradoxical.Such material images not only point to the expression of female desire and the exploration of self identity, but also symbolize the invasion and suppression of orthodox male supremacy values.By decoding the paradoxical symbolic image, the paper analyzes Jolly’s concern for the dilemma of marginalized“alternative”women and her criticism of central cultural oppression and latent male dominated thinking.
