In order to improve the operational efficiency and safety at roundabouts, the setting conditions of pedestrian crossing signals that take into account the needs of both pedestrians and vehicles were proposed.Firstly, under the saturation constraints, the vehicle yield rate was introduced to establish models of vehicle passenger and pedestrian delay by using traffic flow theory.Taking the total delay of traffic participants as an indicator, the pedestrian crossing signal setting conditions were proposed.Secondly, based on video survey data, the number of pedestrian-vehicle interactions was predicted through regression analysis, and the model parameters were calibrated. The impact of different vehicle and pedestrian flows on the total delay of traffic participants was analyzed through numerical simulation. Finally,Yingbin Road-Tengda Street roundabout in Harbin was selected as a case study for model validation and simulation comparison. The results showed that under the same condition of pedestrian flow, the larger the vehicle flow, the smaller the total delay increment after setting pedestrian crossing signal. At roundabouts with high vehicle yielding rates, pedestrian crossing signals were less demanding on vehicle and pedestrian flows.Setting pedestrian crossing signals at eligible roundabout, the pedestrian and vehicle throughput increased, and the total delay of traffic participants decreased by 23.3%compared with the measured data.
