Cyril Le Gros Clark Drummond had two translation works of Su Shi’s fu and essays published in the1930s,which targeted the general public and scholars respectively.His first work,Selections from the Works of Su Tung p’o(1931),is the only existing collection of fu of a singular Chinese writer in the English world,and is the most complete English translation of Su’s fu.These two works,inheriting the work of Herbert Allen Giles and Arthur Waley in fu translation,is an important milestone in the overseas spread of fu and Su’s works.Drummond analyzed the translation strategies of fu and explored Su’s philosophy of art in his second work,The Prose-poetry Su Tung-p’o(1935),which are manifested in his translations and notes.The texts in The Prose-poetry were updated based upon the criticism from Qian Zhongshu and other scholars and the translations and the academic notes were revised and supplemented.Selections,as a work oriented towards the general reader,has artistic illustrations made by Drummond’s wife to tactically collaborate with the texts.An examination of the translation of Su Shi’s fu will benefit translation practice and research on fu and Su’s works.
