"Intermediality"has become an increasingly popular term in literary,communication,and art studies today.It seems that one can apply this term to anything that transcends traditional media boundaries.However,due to the ambiguity the word"medium"itself entails,contemporary literary and art studies are often met with confusion and contradictions when invoking the idea of"Intermediality."But what exactly is Intermediality?How does intermediality take on different formal features and engage in different cultural-political pursuits across different historical contexts?As an event with performative agency,what aesthetic consequences and political challenges does Intermediality bring about?How should we view the limitations and risks of Intermediality?With literature and plastic arts as the priority,this article attempts to map out the conceptual contour of this keyword,highlighting the transformation of its significance over time.It particularly examines how Intermediality brings new opportunities to literature in a"postprint"era,a watershed time characterized by digital media technologies.
