Sonnet 29 is probably my favorite sonnet. In this article I will try to explain the reason by focusing closely on the text and some interpretations of it.Following the reading I draw attention to its constituent formalist parts such as scansion, rhyme, division of the sonnet, and other formalist elements, and suggest a paraphrase, its“verbal”ambiguities and features,by this I mean the use of nouns, verbs and other interesting words. After doing so I examine interpretations of the sonnet, including its apparent religious nature, and briefly look at the sonnet’s after-life,its influence upon its readers.I am suggesting that most of these perspectives may well be adapted to a discussion of other Shakespearian sonnets.
