美国华裔历史学者林郁沁所著《施剑翘复仇案:民国时期公众同情的兴起与影响》一书,是利用情感史方法研究中国近现代史的开创性著作之一。该书以施剑翘复仇事件为个案,透视由该案所引起的一种基于“孝”和“侠”的集体情感,对于20世纪30年代中国城市文化、司法审判和国家统治策略的广泛影响,在阐释和方法论运用上具有鲜明的创新性。该书在英文学界影响颇大,充分展示了情感史研究广阔的学术前景。但是,由于作者过于执着追求理论的超越,导致核心概念使用和具体论证存在一些问题,如对“公众”群体未做必要的细致区分,对历史人物施剑翘刻意争取“公众同情”的解读有预设立场之嫌;过高评估了“公众同情”的政治批判性等。
The book Public Passions:The Trial of Shi Jianqiao and the Rise of Popular Sympathy in Republican China,written by Chinese American historian Eugenia Lean,stands as a pioneering work that utilizes the history of emotions to examine contemporary Chinese history.By exploring the case of Shi Jianqiao's revenge,the book offers insights into popular sentiments rooted in filial piety and knight-errantry,while also showcasing innovative interpretations and methodologies applied to Chinese urban culture,judicial trials,and national governance during the 1930s.This influential book has significantly impacted academia,demonstrating the vast potential for studying the history of emotions.However,the author's intense focus on theoretical advancements has given rise to certain issues.For instance,there is a lack of careful distinction among the public,potentially affecting the interpretation of historical figure Shi Jianqiao's deliberate efforts to evoke“public sympathy”from a predisposed standpoint.Additionally,there may be an overvaluation of the political significance of“public sympathy”and other related factors.Overall,while the book contributes greatly to the field,it would benefit from a more nuanced approach that addresses these concerns.
