第二次鸦片战争后来华的医学传教士师惟善是华中地区真正意义上的第一位医疗传教士,在华七年间,其不仅专注于医疗实践,还对中国展开了一系列调查,同时其对中外关系亦有自己独特的看法。师惟善对以上方面的看法在其文字成果中有所呈现,但其在华期间于刊物上所刊登的事实文章却没有得到学界的重视。以其在刊物上所发表的文章为中心,还原一个更为全面、立体的师惟善形象,可以发现师惟善不仅是善于思考的医生、忠诚的传教士、中医药专家、汉学家,亦是关心西方利益的在华外国人。

Frederick Porter Smith,a medical missionary who came to China after the Second Opium War,was the first medical missionary in central China in the true sense of the word.During his seven years in China,he not only focused on medical practice,but also carried out a series of investigations on China.Moreover,he also had his own unique views on Sino-foreign relations.His views on the above aspects are reflected in his written works,but his factual articles published in journals during his stay in China have not received much attention from the academic community.To reconstruct a more comprehensive and three-dimensional image of Frederick Porter Smith based on his articles published in the journal,we can find that he is not only a thoughtful doctor,a loyal missionary,a Chinese medicine expert,a Sinologist,but also a foreigner in China who cares about the interests of the West.
