In response to Yuan Honggen's"The Profoundity of Subtle Words:Shen Dan's A Study of Dual Narrative Progression and Its Implications for Literary Translation",this essay discusses the following issues.Firstly,in terms of the difficulty of representing and understanding meaning,it reveals Derrida's misuse of Saussure's theory of language, his total neglecting of Saussure's emphasis on the essential"relation between the signifier and the signified, which forms the basis of relatively stable communication.Instead, the present author argues for the possibility of sharing reading in five different ways from a rhetorical perspective.Secondly, this essay explicates how covert/dual narrative progression can extend the meaning of the Chinese idiom"weiyan dayi"(profundity of subtle words),using it to illustrate contrastive kinds of significance the same words generate in different narrative progressions of the same text.In this light,"dayi"rests with the interaction between words in one part of the text and relevant words in other parts of the text, and it is called into being in two or more parallel narrative progressions of the text rather than in the co-text.Thirdly,this essay discusses how to break the plot-centered pre-comprehension and horizon in order to transfer covert/dual narrative progression more successfully in translation.
