0 INTRODUCTION.Soils are generally weak in tension.Compared with compression or shear strength,the tensile strength of soils is usually neglected,for example in the analysis or design of earthen structures.However,knowledge of the tensile strength is of great importance for interpreting cracking behaviors in soils(Wei et al.,2016;Kodikara and Costa,2013).Tensile strength and tensile stress both are important parameters that are considered in desiccation cracking process.
