The concept of modern Chinese newspaper ethos emerged distinctly in the late 1920s,influenced by traditional Chinese personality principles.It represents both an inevitable requirement and a concrete manifestation of strengthening journalistic professional ethics in China.The semantics of this concept have continually evolved,transitioning from ambiguity to professionalism and from fragmented ideas to a systematic approach.During the War of Resistance against Japan,elements of patriotic sentiment also became integrated.Although the concept has not yet achieved a universally recognized interpretation throughout its evolution,its fundamental attributes-independence,public service,credibility,and consistency-are clear.This concept encompasses a variety of functions including cognitive guidance,theoretical framework development,moral standards,quality benchmarks,cultural capital,and professional safeguarding,all of which provide multidimensional support for the press industry's development.With its strong moral undertones,the modern Chinese newspaper ethos constitutes a non-compulsory social norm.It gains societal acceptance and creates a powerful public opinion and inspirational force through its critical and advocative discourse,playing apivotal role in regulating the news media.
