On“Parent-Child Narratives”in A Man's Place of Annie Ernaux

s:Anne Ernaux is a celebrated contemporary French writer and winner of the 2022 Nobel Prize for Literature.In her 1983 masterpiece A Man's Place,she takes her father's death as a starting point for her memories,telling in“plain language”how her father raised her and how she became irreconcilably alienated from him as she made the class leap through her studies.From this book,Ernaux abandoned fictional writing and explored a literary form that is today known in France as the“Parent-Child Narratives”.With reference to several connotations of“Parent-Child Narratives”,this paper analyses in detail the differences between Ernaux's writing and that of fiction and autobiography,as well as its narrative techniques and linguistic characteristics,starting from the specific text A Man's Place.
