The Mirage,a novel,is another powerful work recently produced by Yan Geling,a famous Chinese American woman writer.The book tells of the early development of Hainan Special Zone in a silhouette that captures the time.For those who braved into Hainan with their dream of digging for gold,Yan Geling identifies with the character of those bravers and their pioneering spirit.In the modern geographical construct,Hainan Special Zone has its own historic and realist uniqueness and significance.The author views the community of early bravers into Hainan Island as a starting point in decoding the modern production and geopolitics of Hainan Island.The work depicts three types of the community,showing Zhang Mingbo,the protagonist,as a representative of the bravers at the bottom of the society,experiencing identity change and human discipline in the multiple communities,reflecting the new mechanism formed in the modern urban circumstances,with its daily multiplying new forms,and revealing the author’s effort in getting a handle on the bravers’living artistic appeal.
